Tell us about your business
Dogwood Construction, Inc was started in 1997 by Rob and Angela McGuire. We went into business as a way to support our growing family. The construction field was a natural choice since Rob has worked in some form of construction since the day he graduated from Shelton High School in 1987. When we first started out we had a computer and a desk and Rob was the only employee. Since then our team has grown to include several great community minded families. Besides residential construction, Rob has worked in radiography (industrial x-ray), propane installation and commercial construction and plumbing giving him a well-rounded knowledge of the construction industry.

Community minded: Rob McGuire has been a volunteer fireman since 1994. Rob and Angela also volunteer at the Shelton Presbyterian Church where they have attended since 2001. Angela plays piano for Sunday morning service and Rob is an usher. They also help with the church’s youth ministries.

What we do:
All phases of custom residential construction
Remodels/additions
Garages
Window Replacement
Sidewalks/Patios/Decks
Emergency Repairs
Light Commercial

QUICK TIP

The best reason to build now: Land prices have fallen in the last two years by more than 20% in some areas of the country. Considering how large a chunk of the new home building cost goes toward purchase of the land, cheap land is probably the best reason to get off the fence and start building.

Quick Tip

Another good reason to build now: Labor prices are down. By the end of 2008, new single-family housing starts had slipped below the previous historical low, in 1991, which means custom builders and contractors are hungry for new business. Furthermore, the building laborers and managers working at the moment are seasoned professionals and probably more qualified than the average laborer you could find a few years ago.

Quick Tip

It is a great time to build! Why? First of all, the cost of key home construction materials has declined dramatically - and that rate of decline is slowing. As of December 31, 2008, framing lumber was at its lowest price in four years, down a remarkable 55% since its highest point in 2004. Drywall producers report a 7% further decline in prices since last year, from prices that were already at historical lows.

I've decided to set aside a half hour a day to devote to social networking until I have it running smoothly. I attended a webinar a couple of weeks ago on "Social Networking in 10 minutes a day", and got a lot of good ideas out of it. Frank Kenney's classes are really helping me put it all together.
