North Mason Schools Project Citizens Wins State Competition

Tom Springer, the district coordinator of Project Citizen, just called to tell me that Julie Sullivan's 8th Grade class has just won FIRST PLACE in the State Project Citizen
Competition. Julie's class competed in Hearing Room 1 at the State
Capitol on May 13. They gave their presentations twice and were twice

scored by different judges--and they came out #1 over similar teams from across

the State. The written part of their work--a portfolio and series of

Senior Portfolio Presentations at North Mason High

This afternoon, along with my good friend, Mel Coffman, I took part along with Lisa McGloughlin, our High School Librarian in the annual senior "portfolio presentation" at North Mason High School. This is my third year doing this. As you may know some years ago the teachers elected to require all graduating North Mason seniors to present a portfolio summarizing their high school experience and connecting their education to their future plans. Mel, Ms. MGloughlin and I heard

Project Citizen In The News!

Friends, If you have not seen this morning's Kitsap Sun I hope you will check it out. It was great yesterday to be part of an innovative event in Julie Sullivan's class in Hawkins Middle School. As I mentioned in an earlier post Tom Springer is the coordinator of Project Citizen and Tom helped make this event possible. It is an inspiration to see our Middle School Kids pick a challenging, controversial topic--on their own initiative--and carry through with research and interviews. The students a… Continue

Rachael's Challenge & The Culture of Civility & Compassion

This week’s Belfair Herald has an excellent story by Sunny Manary entitled “Rachael’s Challenge Visits North Mason School.” As you may know Rachael’s Challenge is named after Rachel Joy Scott who was the first student murdered in the Columbine shootings on April 20, 1999. Manary’s story covers the presentation of the challenge to eliminate prejudice and live a life of compassion and service that was given before at a joint assembly of Hawkins Middle School and High School students on W… Continue

Hi John,

Hope you are well.

Just a reminder that Wednesday is the monthly luncheon. It should be a great one. We have the new publisher of the Kitsap Sun speaking. He is 34. It should be interesting to hear what he has to say about the future of the paper and marketing in the Internet era.

We are also doing a new member orientation for anyone who wants to know more about the programs and benefits of the chamber. You are welcome and encouraged to attend. It gets going at 11:00 on Wednesday at Theler.

Thanks for being a member. See you Wednesday the 22nd.
